Fascinating data having the last word speak to an author shying away, second-thoughts expat fashion, from authorizing why they fascinated. As to the authority to have selected those data the drawn ethnographer is as modest as expat contribution to place is, in the common prejudice, modest to downright non-existent, a problem in turn being how virtuous modesty ever was.
This is not to knock ethnographic visits to sociocultural curiosities with care and awe for what the world is like, special-interest tourist fashion. There is no knocking how what happened had to happen as it did for members’ procedures and accounts to take the documented form they did. There is even a dearth of good documentations. We only insist in addition on deriving perspective in the not unprepared visit; on venturing to formulate the place of the place in the sun, ipso facto the habitable concept of place, as the centrally stimulating area of a topic’s reflexive self-applicability, the activated resource-area of the topic. Back comes a wry remark now: what ‘in addition’ is there when a purely allusive interest in ‘grounds’ of members’ accounts to imaginatively hold them to suggests, if anything, the no-lose strategy of those who will never know a disappointed study, probably never fail to find what they are looking for, never know what it is to have been essentially wasting time as it might turn out? We would say, if no-lose means risk-free and infallible, unable to be wrong, then alertness to how an activity finds it essential to itself as human activity that it could be wrong bodes well for analysing it; bodes well for that loosening of an assemblage to re-view how it coheres (called analysation in a former time and here termed Analysis for short) naturally prone to misreading along ‘breaking up into simple elements’ lines which however is others’ problem not ours.
Or again, a ‘hall of mirrors’ image flashes our way. In this image the analytic inquirer leaves his armchair only to fall victim in the same room, in something akin to perceptual or neural mishap, to misapprehending as substantive or warrantable life-world reference what is so much multiplying cross-reflecting artifice of the apprehender’s own eccentric apparatus. Pity rather than blame this private derangement, unshared in detail although looking modestly contagious when the cute or not so cute jargon, a shared idiomatic distinctiveness going nowhere except back to its own hallmark lexicalities, is a declared symptom. Not too nasty, the hall of mirrors syndrome is a health warning to the few at risk; humane advice to take the air of a pedagogic equivalent of the healthy hallucination-free olive terrace work benefiting certain mental health émigrés on the Mediterranean.
Back on topic, so far we have what resembles a squat in a site of domicile more than a home, occupying a location instead of being part of a place, contingently ticking preference boxes rather than stealing hearts utterly, against regional backdrops characterized by passive acceptance or bemused tolerance as against hosting in any sense, all
